Sinifficance and fate of Spikes in Latent Epilepsy



Abstract
Spikes were found frequently in the EEG of the patients who have no clinical symptoms or signs except headache in most cases and dizziness in some. Their other laboratory fincings were also normal. This was named as Latent Epilepsy (LE).
Total 234 LE case since the opening of the Yeungnam University Hospital till now were collected, but 200 cases had only 1 EEG examination. Therefore the remaining 34 cases were analysed. Among the 34, 24 cases received atiep ileptic drugs and 10 not. The following results obtained.
1. The age was mostly from 2nd to 4th decades, being most frequent in the 4th decade male female ration was 1:2.
2. The duration since initiation of the antiepileptics till disappearance of the spikes was from 1 day to 8 months, being most frequent in less than 20 days (12 cases).
3. The duration of the therapy for extinction of the reappeared spikes were from 1 week to 6 months.
4. In the nontreated group, the duration from the finding of the spikes till their disappearence was from 5 days 7,3 months.
5. Reappeared spikes were found in 3 cases and in 1 case ceasing of the therapy produced spikes.
6. The headache was improved when the spikes disappeared.
